Elsa Virtanen

Elsa Virtanen paints light as if it were a material she could lift in her hands. Working in oil on linen, she builds her surfaces in dozens of thin layers, letting earlier passages glow through the ones above.

Trained at the Finnish Academy of Fine Arts, she has exhibited across the Nordics and in Berlin. Her recent series turns away from landscape toward something quieter: the colour of a room at the moment the sun leaves it.
